Fargo 25th Anniversary is coming

Fargo
Saturday, June 5 at 7 PM

Winner of two Academy Awards® (Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for Frances McDormand), the reissue marks the theatrical release of McDormands multi-award-winning latest project, NOMADLAND (Searchlight Pictures).

Things go terribly awry when small-time Minnesota car salesman, Jerry Lundegaard, hires two thugs to kidnap his wife. Once people start dying, the very chipper and very pregnant Police Chief Marge Gunderson takes the case. Is she up to the challenge? You betcha.

Celebrated as a darkly comic twist on the thriller genre, Fargo is also a film of great visual beauty, with cinematography by regular Coen Brothers collaborator, Roger Deakins. When a hapless husband finds himself in insurmountable debt, a series of absurdities embroils him with two inept crooks. Their crimes fall under the jurisdiction of a heavily pregnant rural Minnesota police chief, Marge Gunderson (McDormand), who makes no small effort to solve the case.

Movies are back: Los Hermanos - Saturday, May 29 at 7 PM

Okay, it's time to start up with the films in the Strand. For our first since early last year we have Los Hermanos.

Saturday, May 29 at 7 PM

Two Cuban-born brothers, both virtuoso musicians  Aldo and Ilmar López-Gavilán  live on opposite sides of the geopolitical chasm that separates the U.S. and Cuba. But although they lead very different existences, the brothers have an instinctual connection.

Following their parallel lives in New York and Havana, Los Hermanos / The Brothers offers an amazingly heartfelt  though often startling  view of estranged nations through the lens of music and family. In capturing their momentous reunion and electrifying first performances together, the film shows how family bonds can transcend politics.

Featuring an electrifying, genre-bending score composed by Aldo and performed with his brother, Ilmar, and with guest appearances by maestro Joshua Bell and the Harlem Quartet.
