The show won a Pulitzer Prize. On Broadway, Rent gained critical acclaim and won a Tony Award for Best Musical among other awards. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008 after a 12-year run of 5,123 performances, the ninth longest-running Broadway show at the time.

Join the Quest for Fire

Fire is important, and that point is demonstrated for us in Jean-Jacques Annaud's 1982 film the Quest for Fire. Cavemen on a quest to regain the precious element, facing enemy tribes and dangerous prehistoric creatures? Really? Oh, yeah. It has become a cult film and for good reasons...As Janet Masliin wrote in the New York Times on the movie's release: NOT many movies demand the suspension of disbelief that Jean-Jacques Annaud's ''Quest for Fire'' insists upon, and earns. The audience is asked to imagine that it is seeing what a movie camera would have seen, had the movie camera been invented 80,000 years ago. Some skepticism is in order, but it vanishes fast. ''Quest for Fire'' is more than just a hugely enterprising science lesson, although it certainly is that. It's also a touching, funny and suspenseful drama about prehumans.

Halloween weekend at the Strand= Dracula & Rocky + you...

It's a Halloween party x 2 at the Strand Theatre!

Live onstage: Original production of

Dracula - the Sin of the Flesh

Fri. , Oct. 30 at 7:30 PM / Sat. Oct. 31 at 9 PM

followed by the perfect cult movie:

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Fri. , Oct. 30 at 10:30 PM / Sat. Oct. 31 at 11:45 PM

It's a Halloween party both nights. Between the shows we will have dancing, cheap
drinks, old horror movie trailers, costume contests and more. Come for the night or pick
your pleasure.

If you know anyone who saw our original production Dracula: the Sin of the Flesh last
week, ask them if they had fun. I know we did. It's Dracula, with the familiar characters
of Dr. Seward, Harker, Renfield, Van Helsing, Lucy and Mina; but presented in a new
way using music, dance, special effects and audience immersion. Don't miss this show.

And what can we say about Rocky Horror Picture Show? It's the 40th Anniversary of the
perfect cult film, but it has never been shown in Vicksburg until now. Come dressed as
your favorite character, heckle the actors, and do the Time Warp (again).

Advance Tickets at Highway 61 Coffeehouse:

Best deal - Both shows + party either night: $22

Dracula: $15
($18 at the door)

Rocky: $10 ($12 at the door)

The “Best” is Coming:
This is my favorite time of year. Not the holidays - those are over. It’s the time when all the lists of best films of the year come out in the major papers and international film
magazines. I track down all the lists I can find, and study them carefully. I resolve to see as many “bests” as I can, and as part of my self defined job as film programmer for the Strand, I try to find some of those “bests” for us to share. I am hoping to repeat last year’s coup of bringing to Vicksburg the film that wins the Best Foreign Language Oscar.

I have my theory about what it will be, and have already spoken with its distributor about bringing it here soon.

This year an honorary life achievement Academy Award is going to Hiyao Miyazaki, a terrific Japanese Animation director. I am trying to line up one of his films that did win the Oscar for Best Animated Film a few years back.
Stay tuned.   Daniel W. Boone
