Hosted by David Tennant on Shakespeare’s birthday, and screened live from Stratford-upon-Avon, this star-studded show celebrates Shakespeare’s plays and their enduring influence on music, dance, opera, musical theatre and comedy.

Turandot - Opera Onscreen - Sunday, July 24 at 2 PM

TURANDOT

INTRODUCTION

No man shall ever possess her: to preserve her independence,

the Chinese princess Turandot sets three riddles for every man

seeking her hand in marriage. The price for failure is death.

When an unknown prince achieves the impossible, Turandot is

still unwilling to surrender to him. The Prince, seeking Turandot’s

love, is ready to sacrifice his life if Turandot can discover his

true identity by morning. Furious, Turandot demands that no one

may sleep: everyone must try to discover his name...

This aria, “Nessun Dorma” sung by Calaf, has made Puccini‘s

Turandot world famous. On the Bregenz stage, it‘s delivered

against the imposing backdrop of a dragon-shaped wall on

Lake Constance. Marco Arturo Marelli‘s stage set makes use of

Chinese symbols of power and is inspired by the world‘s longest

man-made structure, the Great Wall of China. The Bregenz wall

is criss-crossed by detachments of terracotta warriors, over two

hundred in all, some of them sky-high, others half-submerged in

the water.

There are Chinese elements in the music, too. Puccini was

inspired by Chinese music boxes given to him by a diplomat friend. Still, however Chinese Puccini’s final opera might appear, the plot is adapted from a Persian tale and the score is fullblown Italian opera.

She: Berenice Bejo, the beautiful Peppy from the Academy Award winning The Artist (2011). Her work in The Artist received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and won her the César Award for Best Actress.

It: The “Florentine” is an historic jewel owned by Marie Neuville and her daughter Julia (Bejo), two diamond experts.

He: Simon Carrerra (Yvan Attal) has just been released from prison and is now on parole.

Les Cowboys at the Strand Sat. July 9

Join us at the Strand Saturday, July 9 at 7 PM for Les Cowboys, a modern day, real world take on John Ford's The Searchers. Instead of John Wayne riding across the desert to find Natalie Wood, this time it is Alain who cannot let the disappearance of his daughter go. He rides out over and over to find her; and like John Wayne, he is not sure what he will do when he finds her especially if she has "gone native." This time, there's no Indians; the "savages" are Muslims and the American frontier has been replaced by Europe and eventually the Middle East. A serious drama in French with English subtitles.

Fun movie Saturday / Opera Sunday at the Strand

Saturday, June 18 at 7 we present The Incredible Adventure of Jojo and his annoying little sister, Avila followed by a Skype conversation with its creators. They will explain the challenges of working with two very young action stars.

Tickets are $5 in advance at Highway 61 Coffeehouse and $7 at the door.

On Sunday, June 19 at 2 PM we present the perfect Father's Day opera: I Due Foscari. as recorded at the Teatro Regio di Parma.

The opera comes in at less than 2 hours, so there's no intermission.

Chaplin at the Strand - Sat., June 11, 2016 at 7 PM

City Lights, the most cherished film by Charlie Chaplin, is also his ultimate Little Tramp chronicle. The writer-director-star achieved new levels of grace, in both physical comedy and dramatic poignancy, with this silent tale of a lovable vagrant falling for a young blind woman who sells flowers on the street (a magical Virginia Cherrill) and mistakes him for a millionaire. Though this Depression-era smash was made after the advent of sound, Chaplin remained steadfast in his love for the expressive beauty of the pre-talkie form. The result was the epitome of his art and the crowning achievement of silent comedy.
