Vicksburg Audience Chooses Oscar hopeful short film
Our audience saw the five nominated Live Action Short films at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center on Saturday, April 17. Afterwards they voted for their Oscar prediction, and their choice was The Present, a Palestinian film many had seen once before when we presented the MANHATTAN SHORT festival at Martin's in October. The film tells the story of a Palestinian man and his daughter who just want to go into town to buy a refrigerator as a gift for his wife (her mother). The film makes the point that such a seemingly simple task is not so easy in a system where the rights of one group are restricted by another.
Coming in second was a tough topical film with a similar theme: Two Distant Strangers in which a black man simply wants to get home to his dog, but his path inevitably intersects with that of a white cop, who seems to find fault with him no matter how he behaves.
Two Distant Strangers
The Oscar nominated Animated Short films will be presented at the SCHF Auditorium on Sunday, April 18 at 5:30 PM. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in advance: https://shortsvicksburg2.brownpapertickets.com/

Again, we want to thank Martin's at Midtown for making it possible for us to get this year's MANHATTAN SHORT in front of the Strand audience. It was a fun place to see a movie, and maybe we can get together again there.
The Vicksburg audience was in perfect alignment with the worldwide audience in their choices for best films and actor.
