Nureyev at the Strand Saturday, June 1

Saturday, June 1 at 7 PM
Nureyev

This striking documentary from BAFTA nominated directors, Jacqui Morris and David Morris, traces the extraordinary life of Rudolf Nureyev, the most famous male dancer that transcended fame in the dance world to become a pop culture icon of his time. It charts his rise from humble beginnings, to his eventual defection to the West, an event that shocked the world.

The film features never-before-seen footage and contextualizes not just the man,but also the times in which he lived, discussing the politically charged divide between Russia and the West and the critical role that Nureyev played as a cultural and global phenomenon. A quarter of a century after Nureyev’sdeath, his story has never been more relevant: his defection to the West is symbolic as Russia and the West struggle once more to reconcile conflicting values; as we obsess over celebrity, Nureyev’s status as a global icon in an age before social media is doubly significant; as the Russian government’s attitude towards homosexuality is seen as medieval in its archaism, Nureyev’s unapologetic openness about his sexuality over half a century ago can be seen for the act of trailblazing bravery it truly was; and finally, having left a legacy in the dance world stemming from Mikhail Baryshnikov to the current era of Marcelo Gomes, Carlos Acosta and Sergei Polunin, it is telling that Nureyev is still widely considered the finest male ballet dancer ever to grace the stage.

(Naomi McDougall Jones as Sarah)

What is the JVTA?

The filmmakers of Bite Me are renting an RV and taking Bite Me on the road - a 3-month Joyful Vampire Tour of America from May 8 - July 31, spreading the wild, raucous joy of this film and its characters.

Join writer, producer and actress Naomi McDougall Jones and friends for a special screening of Bite Me - a subversive romantic comedy about a real-life vampire and the IRS agent who audits her. Bite Me is a unique, while universally relatable story about outsiders fighting to be seen.

(Christian Coulson as James)

After the screening at the Strand there will be a Q&A followed by a Joyful Vampire Ball.

WAIT, WAIT, WAIT, WHAT IS A JOYFUL VAMPIRE BALL? AND WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO WEAR?

A Joyful Vampire Ball is a chance to meet the filmmakers and team behind Bite Me, celebrate, laugh, and chat with your fellow audience members, but, most importantly, Joyful Vampire Balls are a chance for each and every person to celebrate whatever makes them feel most joyful.

Everyone is invited to wear a special outfit to their screening/vampire ball - it can be a vampire costume, of course, but it could also be a tiara, wings, a Viking dress, a Christmas sweater - really anything that makes you feel fabulous and joyful. That thing that you love but have thought, "but when the heck am I ever going to wear this?" Wear that. Now.

Part-party, part-event, part celebration, each Vampire Ball is a space where everyone is welcome, nobody is judged, and every uniqueness, large and small, is given room to be expressed. Come wearing whatever you like and get ready for the most joyful night you'll have all month!

Hedwig and the Angry Inch - Live onstage

Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Text by John Cameron Mitchell, Music and Lyrics by Stephen Trask
Live on the stage of the Strand Theatre in downtown Vicksburg, this groundbreaking Obie-winning Off-Broadway smash which also won multiple awards for its hit film adaptation. It tells the story of "internationally ignored song stylist" Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock 'n' roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, which has left her with just "an angry inch." This outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious story is performed by Hedwig (née Hansel) in the form of a rock gig/stand-up comedy routine backed by the hard-rocking band "The Angry Inch." Using songs and monologues, Hedwig tells her story... Hedwig describes her life's search for "The Origin of Love" and her other half. It's a rocking ride, funny, touching, and ultimately inspiring to anyone who has felt life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.

All performances at 7:30 PM

Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4
