It's a Halloween party both nights. Between the shows we will have dancing, cheap
drinks, old horror movie trailers, costume contests and more. Come for the night or pick
your pleasure.

If you know anyone who saw our original production Dracula: the Sin of the Flesh last
week, ask them if they had fun. I know we did. It's Dracula, with the familiar characters
of Dr. Seward, Harker, Renfield, Van Helsing, Lucy and Mina; but presented in a new
way using music, dance, special effects and audience immersion. Don't miss this show.

And what can we say about Rocky Horror Picture Show? It's the 40th Anniversary of the
perfect cult film, but it has never been shown in Vicksburg until now. Come dressed as
your favorite character, heckle the actors, and do the Time Warp (again).

The Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival American Tour

On Friday October 16 & Saturday, October 17 The Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia is sending 3 feature films and 6 shorts to Vicksburg, as part of their first Sitges America Tour. These are films that played at last years festival in Catalonia that have not been released in America yet. For the fantasy fan this is a rare opportunity to see these films.

7 PM: The Fantastic Shorts of Sitges

Lothar: Whenever Lothar sneezes, nearby objects explode. To protect the world he locks himself into a underground home, isolated from the outer world. One day, an accident occurs.

Luna: A cold-blooded serial killer invades a family’s quiet home in a remote desolate town. The sole survivor of his latest crime is a young girl, who does everything she can to escape before the mysterious stranger finds her. 

 What Doesn't Kill You: After dying in a horrific car crash, two bullied teens reappear completely healed and must decide the fate of their paralyzed friend.

Evil Twin: A group of gangsters get their hands on a teleportation device bringing with it endless possibilities. The group splits into good and bad. And now the fight begins!

Nada S.A.:  Carlos has been unemployed for years; he’s desperate after failing at all the work interviews he’s gone to. One day he sees an announcement for a company looking for someone who wants to get paid for doing nothing. Carlos gets the job and that day will change his life.

The Last Halloween: The city is in silence, and the streets, deserted. It doesn’t look like Halloween and yet, four kids get ready to go trick or treating, door to door, gaining a kindness that seems to have disappeared in the devastated Metropolis.

The “Best” is Coming:
This is my favorite time of year. Not the holidays - those are over. It’s the time when all the lists of best films of the year come out in the major papers and international film
magazines. I track down all the lists I can find, and study them carefully. I resolve to see as many “bests” as I can, and as part of my self defined job as film programmer for the Strand, I try to find some of those “bests” for us to share. I am hoping to repeat last year’s coup of bringing to Vicksburg the film that wins the Best Foreign Language Oscar.

I have my theory about what it will be, and have already spoken with its distributor about bringing it here soon.

This year an honorary life achievement Academy Award is going to Hiyao Miyazaki, a terrific Japanese Animation director. I am trying to line up one of his films that did win the Oscar for Best Animated Film a few years back.

The Haunting is Coming

Join us at the Strand for Robert Wise's classic flm from1963: The Haunting. It is set in a house that may be haunted. It's in black and white; it features no special effects, and no gore, so how scary could it be? Join us to discover the answer.

It's at the Strand at 8 PM on Saturday, October 4. Advance tickets are only $5. Available at Highway 61 Coffeehouse. After the film members of the Delta Paranormal Project will explain their plans to conduct an investigation in the theatre.

Charlie Chaplin Shorts at the Strand

A Hundred Year Old Tramp is Coming to Eighty Year Old Strand Theatre

A caterpillar mustache + a bowler hat + one funny walk + a comic genius = “The Little Tramp.”

Actor, director, writer, composer Charlie Chaplin was born in 1889, but the “Little Tramp,” his most famous persona, was born in 1914 - one hundred years ago. The Strand Theatre will celebrate the centennial of this icon of the early days of motion pictures (and its own eightieth anniversary) with special screenings of 12 short Chaplin silent comedies on Saturday, September 20 and Sunday, September 21. The films each last about 25 minutes and will be shown in blocks of three. Discount advance tickets will be on sale at Highway 61 Coffeehouse. Advance tickets for each block (3 films) will be $5. An advance pass to see all 12 films will be $15. At the door tickets will be $7 per block.

This collection of Chaplin's comedies for the Mutual Studio features 12 newly restored films, all scanned under the aegis of Association Chaplin at a resolution of 2,000 lines from original 35mm prints gathered from archives all over the world, then digitally assembled and restored, a collaborative effort of Lobster Films in Paris and L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, Italy.

Daniel Boone, film programmer for the Strand said, "Yes, these are old silent films, but they were made at a time when a person of any age could watch them and understand the humor as well as the emotions of the actors. I think grandparents should bring their grandchildren, (and vice versa) to these films. We have scheduled two programs that children 12 and under can see for free with their family. This will be a perfect family outing. We have spent all Summer working on a new air conditioning system for the theatre, and we are excited about having audiences come experience it."
